Why AI doesn't mention your brand

If answer engines never name your company, it is almost always one of six causes: the model cannot crawl you, it cannot tell what you are, it confuses you with another entity, your pages have nothing quotable, competitors own the comparative content, or you have no third-party corroboration. Each has a distinct symptom and a distinct fix.

1. The crawler cannot read your site

Symptom: your brand is never cited with a link, in any model, for any question — including questions about your own brand name.

Cause: robots.txt blocks AI agents, or your site renders entirely in JavaScript so the fetched HTML is an empty shell. Most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript.

Fix: allow GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended in robots.txt, and serve real HTML — server-rendered or prerendered — for every public page.

2. The model cannot tell what you are

Symptom: the model mentions you but describes you vaguely or wrongly — wrong industry, wrong customer, wrong country.

Fix: pick one sentence that says what you do and for whom, and use it verbatim on your home page, your about page, your Organization schema, your LinkedIn page and every directory listing. Consistency matters more than cleverness here.

3. Entity confusion with a similar name

Symptom: the model confidently attributes another company's facts to you, or vice versa.

Fix: state the disambiguation explicitly on your site — 'X is a Y company based in Z; it is not related to the similarly named W' — and add sameAs links in your Organization schema pointing at your verified profiles. Models pick this up surprisingly quickly.

4. Nothing on your pages is quotable

Symptom: your page is retrieved (you can see it in Perplexity's source list) but the answer never uses your wording.

Fix: add checkable claims. Replace 'fast setup' with the actual number of minutes, 'trusted by many' with the actual count, 'affordable' with the actual price. Then put those claims in short, self-contained sentences directly under a question heading.

5. Competitors own the comparison pages

Symptom: you are absent specifically on 'best X' and 'X vs Y' questions, but present on brand questions.

Fix: publish honest comparison content that names competitors and states where they are the better choice. Models heavily favour pages that read as even-handed, and a page that only praises itself is discounted.

6. No third-party corroboration

Symptom: you are cited only from your own domain, never alongside independent sources.

Fix: get named on pages the models already retrieve — category round-ups, review sites, credible directories, podcast and interview write-ups. One mention on a page that is already cited is worth more than ten pages on your own site.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell which cause applies to me?

Ask a model a question about your own brand by name. No answer at all points to crawling. A wrong answer points to entity confusion. A vague answer points to unclear positioning. A correct answer that never appears on category questions points to quotability or comparison coverage.

How long do fixes take to show up?

Crawling and entity fixes often show within two to four weeks. Comparison content and third-party mentions take longer, typically one to three months.

Does adding schema alone fix this?

No. Schema helps a model confirm what it already inferred. It cannot rescue a page with no substantive, checkable content.
